Bug #9732
Game hangs at launch on retina Mac
100%
Description
I have an issue with the game simply not launching at all.
Impossible to change parameters or even see the main screen.
This happens wherever I launch the game using Steam or the KSP.app.
Most times the game launches and I can see the SQUAD logo an the load progress bar but sometimes it seems even the SQUAD logo fails to load and I am facing the dark abyss of a black screen, the spinning beach ball of death as my only companion...
It seems this problem is related somehow to #3869 and retina resolutions because if I go to the folder where KSP.app is installed and force it to "Open in Low Resolution" the game launches as if nothing. It remains playable for hours.
To activate the "Open in Low Resolution" option :
- Locate your install (With steam the game is located at ~Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Kerbal Space Program)
- Right click on KSP.app (or KSP)
- Click on "Get Info"
- Under the "General" group locate and tick the "Open in Low Resolution" check box
Now the game will run albeit in low resolution mode with little to no graphics qualities and no steam account connection.

This issue also happens on my mac.
I have tried turning all graphics settings to low and uninstalling/reinstalling. Nothing has fixed this and it started after the 1.1.2 update.
The game opens, loads a little, then freezes and requires a "force quit".

I have the exact same issue since I updated OS X to 10.11.5
I tried it with my modded install and a plain vanilla install and both just load a black screen and nothing more.

Deactivating steam overlay seems to help!
To deactivate steam overlay for KSP:
- go to your steam library
- right click on "Kerbal Space Program" in the list
- click on "Properties"
- in the "General" tab uncheck the "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game" option
The game should launch now.
I believe it could be an issue related to Unity 5. I'm working with Unity and migrated my game to Unity 5 recently. One big change is this. With my setup my game crashes or hangs just like KSP when launched from steam.
So the only solution is to deactivate the steam overlay and then I can launch the game. I have no solution to this problem so far.
After deactivating Steam overlay fo my game I tried the same remedy for KSP I was able to log a few hours of play on steam! YAY!

Also now KSP 1.1.3 launches properly even when "Open in Low Resolution" is not checked.
It might be that I needed to launch it in that mode once to setup low settings in game.
But now that the settings are set I have decent performance and I can ignore this option without the game hanging when I launch it outside of Steam.
