Broken terrain at the old airfield with OpenGL and high terrain details

Version: 0.90, 32bit, Windows
Switches: -force-opengl -popupwindow
Issue report:
When approaching the old airfield near the KSC, at some distance (approx 500m or so), the terrain is broken as depicted in the attached images. This only happens when you are already quite near to the island. From a distance everything looks still normal. This only happens with "Terrain Detail" set to "high". On "normal", everything looks as it should, I have not tested low yet. I first suspected the mod "Kerbal Konstructs" to be the culprit, but this was not the case.
How to reproduce:
Build a plane, use high terrain detail and OpenGL and fly to the old airfield.

After some more research during which I removed all non-stock elements from the game, it turned out that the issue was caused by the terrain detail settings of a settings.cfg
file from a previous version that I had copied over to 0.90:
PRESET { name = High PLANET { name = Kerbin minDistance = 8 minSubdivision = 1 maxSubdivision = 14 <--- This is 10 now for the High preset.
I still think this should not have happened, though, can somebody explain that?
This issue can now probably be closed.

I also wanted to mention that I was encountering another strange issue that might be connected with this one. I dubbed it "The Underground Kraken": When landing on the Mün with relatively simple landers, it would happen from time to time that the lander would be spontaneously catapulted into a random direction, often resulting in rapid unplanned disassembly. This would happen upon exiting the physics range around the craft and reentering it, either by EVA or by switching crafts. The logs would show a negative height shortly before the Kraken attacks. The timer in the upper left corner would turn to red (high physics load) before the lander would be destroyed/launched.
I hope that this was also connected with the wrong terrain settings.
