It is possible to "store" a part in the EVA building menu after closing the menu
To reproduce:
To reproduce:
- control a Kerbal Engineer
- open the EVA building menu
- click on a part that is on the nearby vessel, the part will now follow the mouse
- close the EVA building menu
- the part is now "stored" in the EVA building menu, it is not on the vessel, not on the ground, not in the vessel's inventory slot or the Kerbal's inventory slot
- the Kerbal can now board a vessel, or do anything it wants
- open the EVA building menu again, the part appears and follow the mouse, the part has been "taken out" from the menu

Tried to reproduce following the instructions provided and I couldn't. Are any mods installed? Has a file verification been done? Need more info.
