Description

After the latest update of Kerbal Space Program I can manually start the game from the game folder (KSP_x64.exe), but it doesn't Start from the Steam client as it's supposed, so I something is broken in the Steam starter.

The message (first image) says it can't start KSP because it's missing ..\rootfolder.\PDLauncher\launcherpatcher.exe of course since there is not even a PDLauncher-folder, but according to steam all files are there (second image).

I've done a scratch re-install multiple times to multiple drives (with lots of free space), i.e. uninstalling from the steam client, then manually deleting the remaining game folder. I've disabled all security protection functions (antivir, fw, etc), even though no alarms have gone off or been logged during the installations. Tried disabling/re-enabling Steam DLC:s, and moving the game between drives through the Steam client. Tried downloading from different Steam sites (US and Germany, instead of Sweden). Also tried the beta settings to instead downgrade (uninstall/reinstall) backwards to every version from 1.12.4 to 1.9.1 and still the exact same problem.

I can start the game from it's folder (without Steam client) but then the games whines (bunch of errors) that it might not work correctly since it hasn't been started through Steam. Image 4 is the error message I get if I try to start Kerbal in Steam Offline mode (which differs from the error in online mode - image 1).

According to the official Steam support team the fault is yours and I have to contact you guys for a remedy to the problem.

PS. in case there are any doubts, this is for a scratch install, no mods, no beta, no nothing but the vanilla game and all purchased DLC:s.

Firstly note I am not a Squad or Private Division employee.

I couldn't replicate your problem. It might be that your Windows installation isn't English but its just a guess. I tried steam in Swedish but it still worked as it should.

On the KSP forums people discovered how to bypass the launcher using the following so it might also fix your problem:
1. Steam: Right click on Kerbal Space Program
2. Steam: Click on properties (I added a screenshot)
3. Steam: Enter the following into Launch Options but using your personal path: "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\KSP_x64_Steam" %Command% -popupwindow
4. Main KSP folder: Go to the installation folder and create a short cut of KSP_x64.exe (right click on KSP_x64.exe and select create shortcut)
5. Main KSP folder: Change the shortcut name to KSP_x64_Steam

Important:
  • The shortcut aspect is very important to making it work correctly especially if certain mods are used.
  • Remember to change the path (D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program is my path and probably not yours) to whatever your path is.

Hi.

First, thank you for the quick response.

That you're unable to replicate it is what is fascinating me. I'm either the only person with this problem, or the only one who's bothered to file it. The only other sign of this bug I've seen is a post in the forum with the exact same error but on a MacOS.

I do know how to bypass the launcher. The method you've chosen to suggest unfortunately gives rise to a lot of other error messages from the game itself.

The cleanest workaround is actually the mod KSSL (KSP Simple Steam Launcher). But that is a workaround, not a solution to a potential bug.

My money is that it is a Steam-related bug, but since the Steam support team insist the issue is on the dev side I need a confirmation or something I can smack the Steam support over the head with. Thus this official bug report.

It also just struck me that although it might be futile to try to play KSP on my laptop, installing it is not a problem, so, said and done. I have now replicated the problem on another computer (on which KSP haas never been installed), but the same Steam account.

My suggestion causes other errors? like what?

And it works on the laptop but not your PC? interesting

No, my point was that it did NOT work on another computer.

Yes, if I remember correctly (it was a while ago) the method for workaround you suggested caused KSP to throw a bunch of errors after loading, mainly for mods, while KSSL did not result in any errors.

Wait. You didn't go and test the work around I suggested here today?

There are two versions of the workaround.

The first one has the errors you are talking about. The second does not.
The second version uses a shortcut which somehow fixes the problem.

I retested it just for this bug report and it still works perfectly.

Why should I when I've already mentioned I know about another fully functional workaround (KSSL)?

The bug report is for the missing files and/or wrong launch command which Steam blame the developers for.
