Game won't run after game update on Mac

Description
I've been playing KSP intermittently for several years.
Since I hadn't played since November, I ran the KSPLauncher to check if there were any updates. Turned out there was. So I went to download the latest version from the website (the portable version), and overwrote my existing version.
Ever since that, I can't start the game. All it gives me is a black screen with a half-filled yellow bar at the bottom, which will not move even if you wait an hour. If I run the KSPLauncher again, it says the installed version is "-1".
I've tried running it straight from the download, with the same result, so it doesn't have anything to do with my mods or anything like that. On the insistence of support I have also manually updated the user permissions, also without result.
Either there is something in an OSX update that is blocking it from working, or the available download is corrupted, because no matter what I do, I can't run the game.
Please help.

Updated by I've just tried it through the installer version, that one works without a hitch, so there has to be something corrupted in the portable download file. Since space on my internal hard drive is very limited, I really want to use that instead. please fix it.
