Cannot Quickload: message fades despite holding key

Description
Holding F9 shows on screen "Hold F9 to load las quicksave…" but despite holding the key, this message fades away after 2 seconds.
macOS Catalina.
It looks just as if the Quickload shortcut was not held long enough (as if just pressing F9)
- Hold fn+F9: same
- Same issue with Touch bar and wireless keyboard
- Assigned another key (physical on MacBook Pro to rule out Touch bar issues): same
- Used alt+fn+F9: brings up quicksave menu with the desired quicksave listed. Select, hit "Load" > button reacts but no loading proceeds Tried setting Touch bar to function keys (no need to press fn) -> same issue
Currently experiencing on 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro with Touch bar.
Issue first encountered on 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro without Touch bar.

Updated by Isolated issue by moving all mods and (old) ModuleManager files away from the GameData folder.
That did it, duh. Good old cleanup.
Quicksave was clean. Will try to figure out how to close this ticket.
