Sandbox made craft in career VAB folder causing loading to fail

Description
I was trying to look at a craft file for someone but when I dropped it into my VAB folder the game would no longer popup a selection box of files to load and the launchpad was similarly non-functional. After some time testing I discovered that the same thing happened to any career save I put the craft file into. I could open it no problem in a sandbox save but any career mode was broken.
Just the presence of the file in the folder stopped the load popup and launchpad working and after some time clicking around KSP simply crashed. KSP needs to either simply not show the sandbox craft or pop up a warning like the missing parts one if it is selected.
Windows 7 64 bit machine.
